September is National Library Card sign-up month! Did you know that simply signing up for a card is a great way you can show your support for your library? If you're looking for other ways to support your library, read below!
1. Borrow Books and Materials
The simplest way to support your library is to use its resources! Borrow books, movies, audiobooks, and even e-books. The more materials are checked out, the more funding your library is likely to receive to expand its collection. You can also use your library resources like Libby to download e-books. Take advantage of your school libraries, too!
2. Donate Books
Most libraries accept donations of gently used books, DVDs, and other materials. These donations often end up in the library’s collection or sold at book sales to raise funds for new materials. Be sure to check your library’s donation guidelines.
3. Join the Friends of the Library
Many libraries have a “Friends of the Library” group that organizes fundraising events, book sales, and other community programs. Becoming a member is a great way to show your support and get involved in making your library the best it can be.
4. Attend Library Events
Libraries host a variety of events, from book clubs and storytimes to craft nights and educational workshops. When I asked librarians on Instagram the best way to support their library, this was their #1 answer! By attending, you not only take advantage of what your library offers, but you also show that the community values these programs, which can lead to more funding and expanded services. Our school library also has summer program where the kids can visit a few times a week as well!
5. Spread the Word
Promote your library by sharing its resources and events on social media or telling friends and family about the services available. Word of mouth is a powerful way to bring more people through the doors. :)
Headed to the library soon? Grab one of our book bags for your trip, a new bookmark or two, and our kids reading passport or journal to keep track of what you're reading!
